Why use this

Why does your website need a complete favicon set?

The browser tab icon is one of those small details that tells visitors instantly whether a website is professionally built or thrown together. A missing favicon shows a generic browser placeholder. A pixelated one suggests the developer grabbed a random file and moved on. A crisp, correctly sized favicon set makes your site look sharp everywhere a visitor encounters it, from the first tab they open to the home screen shortcut they add later.

Browsers and operating systems request favicons in very specific sizes depending on context. A 16x16 pixel icon for the browser tab, 32x32 for bookmarks and Windows taskbar pinned sites, 48x48 for some desktop shortcuts, 180x180 for iOS Add to Home Screen, 192x192 and 512x512 for Android PWA icons and splash screens. Without the correct sizes, browsers fall back to a scaled version that often looks blurry or jagged.

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) require the larger sizes to meet browser installation requirements. If your site can be installed as a PWA, missing the 192x192 or 512x512 sizes will either block installation entirely or produce an ugly stretched icon on the user's home screen. Generating the complete set upfront prevents these problems without any extra work.

Start with a square image at least 512x512 pixels with a transparent background for the best results across all generated sizes. Simple, bold designs at this scale look clean even at 16x16.

How it works

Generate your favicon set in three steps

All resizing uses your device's native Canvas API. Your images are processed securely and stay private.

1

Upload your icon image

Use a square PNG with a transparent background, at least 512x512 pixels. Simple logos and lettermark designs work best at small sizes.

2

Preview all sizes

The tool generates all six standard sizes instantly. Preview each one to check that your design reads clearly at the smallest dimensions.

3

Download individual sizes or all at once

Download each size individually or grab all six with one click. Place them in your site root and link them from your HTML head.

Tips for a professional favicon set

Use a square source image

Favicons are always square. A non-square source image will be cropped or stretched to fit. Crop to square before uploading to control which part of the image is shown.

Simple designs survive the smallest sizes

At 16x16 pixels there are very few pixels to work with. Detailed illustrations, thin fonts, and complex logos often become unreadable. A bold letter, simple shape, or strong symbol works best.

Use a transparent background

A PNG with a transparent background lets the favicon adapt to both light and dark browser themes. A white or colored background may look out of place in dark mode browser UIs.

Add the HTML link tags for every size

Generating the files is only step one. Add the correct link tags to your HTML head for each size. Without the link tags, browsers may not find or display your favicon correctly.

Test on both light and dark browser themes

Check your favicon on both a light and dark browser tab. A dark logo on a transparent background may be invisible in dark mode. Consider a version with a light-colored icon for dark backgrounds.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What image should I start with?

Use a square PNG with a transparent background, at least 512x512 pixels. Simple, bold designs work best because they stay readable when scaled down to 16x16 pixels.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Place the generated PNG files in your website root directory. Add link tags in your HTML head: for example, for the 32x32 size add this tag - link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png".

Do I really need all six sizes?

For basic browser tab support you only need 16x16 and 32x32. For full PWA and mobile home screen support add 180x180 for Apple, 192x192 and 512x512 for Android. More sizes means better coverage across devices.
