Why use this

Why convert AVIF to PNG?

AVIF does support transparency - it is one of the format's genuine strengths over JPEG. But AVIF's ecosystem support outside of modern web browsers remains thin. Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and most design tools still cannot import AVIF files directly. If you have received an AVIF asset or exported one from a headless browser screenshot, PNG is the format that slots into every design workflow without friction or plugins.

PNG is the gold standard for lossless image work. Unlike JPEG, PNG compression is completely lossless - every pixel value is preserved exactly. This makes PNG the right choice when you are editing the image after conversion, using it as a source for further exports, or need crisp edges on graphics, logos, and UI elements where any lossy artifact would be visible. It is also the only widely-supported format that handles full 8-bit alpha transparency.

Converting AVIF to PNG is especially valuable in design handoffs. Developers and designers working in Figma or similar tools can import PNG without any plugin or workaround. If your AVIF contains a transparent logo or an icon with a transparent background, the PNG conversion keeps that alpha channel intact - saving you the work of re-creating a knockout background from scratch.

PNG files are larger than AVIF by design - lossless compression trades file size for pixel-perfect accuracy. If final file size matters for web use, run the PNG output through a compressor afterwards.

How it works

How AVIF to PNG conversion works

The conversion uses your device's built-in AVIF decoder and Canvas API to produce a lossless PNG output. Truly secure, no account needed.

1

Select your AVIF file

Click the upload area or drag and drop your .avif file. The browser decodes it using its native AVIF codec support.

2

Preview the result

A preview renders immediately. Transparent areas appear as a checkerboard pattern, confirming the alpha channel is intact.

3

Download your PNG

Click Download to save a lossless .png file to your device. No quality settings needed - PNG is always lossless.

Side by side

AVIF vs PNG: the key differences

These two formats serve different masters. AVIF wins on file size; PNG wins on compatibility, editability, and lossless fidelity.

AVIFModern
  • Extremely compact - 40-50% smaller than JPEG, and far smaller than PNG for photographic content
  • Supports HDR, wide-gamut color, and transparency in a single file format
  • Growing browser support: Chrome, Firefox, and Safari all render AVIF natively
  • Poor support in design tools, desktop image editors, and older operating systems
  • Slow encoding compared to PNG and JPEG - not ideal for high-volume automated workflows
PNGLossless
  • Universally supported in every design tool, browser, OS, and image editor available
  • Lossless compression - every pixel is stored exactly, making it ideal for editing and archiving
  • Full alpha transparency with 8-bit or 16-bit alpha channels depending on the encoder
  • Larger files than AVIF, WebP, or JPEG for photographic or high-detail imagery
  • Not efficient for photographs where some quality loss is acceptable and smaller size is preferred

Getting the most from your AVIF to PNG conversions

Verify transparency after converting

Open the PNG in your design tool and place it over a colored background. If the transparent areas look correct, you are good to go.

Compress the PNG output for web use

Lossless PNGs from photos can be large. Run the output through our PNG compressor to cut the size by 20-40% without any quality loss.

Use PNG for logos and icons

For graphics with flat colors, sharp lines, and transparency, PNG is the right long-term format. AVIF shines for photos, not vector-derived artwork.

Keep your AVIF source files

PNG captures the AVIF decode losslessly, so no additional quality is lost in this step. But always keep your originals for future re-exports.

Check your browser version first

AVIF decoding requires Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, or Safari 16+. If the tool cannot load your file, update your browser and try again.

For batch work, open multiple tabs

This tool processes one file at a time. For multiple conversions, open extra tabs and run them simultaneously to save time on larger jobs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF to PNG conversion lose any quality?

The PNG output is lossless from the decoded AVIF frame. AVIF itself is typically lossy (unless encoded in lossless mode), so any quality decisions were made when the AVIF was originally created. The PNG faithfully captures whatever the AVIF currently contains.

Will my AVIF transparent background be preserved in PNG?

Yes. PNG supports full alpha transparency, and the converter carries the alpha channel over from the AVIF source. Test it by opening the PNG in your image editor - transparent areas will appear as a checkerboard.

Why is my PNG output much larger than the AVIF?

That is expected behavior. AVIF uses lossy compression to achieve tiny file sizes. PNG stores every pixel losslessly, which results in significantly larger files - especially for photographs. If file size is a concern, compress the PNG output or convert to JPEG instead.

Which browsers support AVIF conversion in this tool?

Chrome 85 and later, Firefox 93 and later, and Safari 16 and later all support AVIF decoding. If you are on an older version, the tool cannot decode the input file.

Can I use the output PNG in Figma or Sketch?

Absolutely - that is one of the primary use cases for this tool. Both Figma and Sketch import PNG files natively. Drag the converted PNG straight into your design file and it will work without any plugins.
