Six Versions of One Photograph
I took one strong photograph: a sunset over a mountain lake with excellent colors and a clear subject. Over six weeks, I posted this same photo to six secondary accounts I created specifically for the test. Each account started with zero posts and was left untouched for a week before the first post so the algorithm would treat each one equally. The only variable was how I prepared the image before uploading.
Version one was the original JPEG straight from my camera at 6000 x 4000 pixels. Version two was the standard 1080 x 1080 square format. Version three was the portrait 1080 x 1350 format, which takes up more vertical space in the feed. Version four was the landscape 1080 x 566 format. Version five was a heavily compressed portrait at low quality, around 55% JPEG. Version six was a properly optimized portrait image exported at high quality.
What Six Weeks of Data Showed
The portrait format at 1080 x 1350 pixels outperformed every other version on every metric I tracked: likes, comments, profile visits, and reach. The original unresized file from the camera performed the worst of all. Instagram's own compression applied to an already-large file made the image look over-sharpened and slightly color-shifted. The landscape format received the fewest likes of any intentionally formatted version. The heavily compressed low-quality version performed nearly 60% below the optimized portrait, and several comments on it noted the photo looked 'pixelated.'
Portrait orientation at the 4:5 ratio (1080x1350px) consistently outperforms square and landscape formats on Instagram feeds. It occupies more vertical screen space as users scroll, which gives the image more time to stop the scroll before the viewer's thumb moves on.
Why the Same Photo Gets Completely Different Results
When you upload a photo without preparing it first, you hand control of the final visual quality to Instagram's compression algorithm. The platform applies aggressive compression to manage server costs, and that compression is not always kind to fine details and color gradients. By preparing your image at the right dimensions and a high quality setting before uploading, you work with the platform instead of against it.
The dimension choice matters for a reason that has nothing to do with algorithms: physics. A portrait image physically occupies more of a phone screen as someone scrolls through their feed. More screen real estate means the viewer's eye spends more time on your image before it leaves the viewport. That extra fraction of a second is often the difference between a scroll-past and a moment of genuine attention.
How I Prepare Every Image Before Posting Now
My current process is straightforward and takes about two minutes per image. For feed posts, I use the social media resizer to get the exact dimensions for the platform and format I am targeting. It includes preset dimensions for every major platform, so I do not have to remember specific pixel requirements. For custom crops where I need to choose exactly which part of the frame appears in the portrait, I use the image cropper first, then resize.
I also do a quick file size check before uploading. Anything over 1MB gets one more pass through the compressor to keep it under that threshold. The difference in visual quality and engagement consistency since I started this process is clear enough that I will never go back to uploading straight from my camera. Two minutes of preparation per image has made my results far more predictable, and knowing why posts perform the way they do is worth more than the time it saves.
